The Power of a Story

The Power of a Story

I joined World Pulse back in 2023. I read powerful stories of people doing incredible things in their communities, and they were truly inspiring. Yet, every time I thought of writing my own story, doubts would creep in. Is my story worth telling? Do I really have anything to say? Where do I even start?

Again and again, these thoughts won. Eventually, I stopped coming here to read the stories. But World Pulse never left my mind. I kept praying that one day, I would return—with strength and courage to share my story.

You might wonder, Why do I need strength and confidence to tell my story? Because I want to be authentic. And authenticity demands honesty. Sometimes, being honest about where we come from, what we do, and who we are isn’t easy. Shame and fear hold us back.

But I’ve seen the power of storytelling. I love a good podcast, and I’ve listened to stories that heal, stories that break the silence, stories that free both the storyteller and the listener. I’ve witnessed fear and shame lose their grip when a story is told. That is true victory.

And today, I claim that victory. Today is the day I tell my story.

I am a girl, the firstborn of two amazing parents—Joseph Muriithi and Janet Wangari. The eldest of three daughters, my sisters are Aquila Wandia and Esther Nyakio. I was born and raised in a small village called Kanjii in Kagumo town, Kirinyaga County, before moving to Murang’a, where I completed high school and have lived ever since. I am also married to a wonderful man, Kenneth Gitonga.

I have big dreams and many aspirations, but most importantly, I am here to tell my story. Because it is not just mine—it belongs to you, to the next person, and to the one after that. So as I step forward, dear reader, I hope that if you’ve ever been held back by doubt or fear, you will find the courage to share your story too. Because our voices matter. Your story matters.
