The Illusion of Barriers: What’s Really Holding You Back?
There’s an old African proverb that says, “The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.” It’s a reminder that sometimes, the biggest limitations we face aren’t physical—they’re mental and emotional.
Recently, I came across an image of a sheep standing behind a gate, appearing trapped. Yet, there was no fence on either side—just open space. It struck me deeply. How often do we, like that sheep, remain “stuck” behind invisible barriers that no longer exist?
In our professional and personal lives, many of us live within boundaries we built years ago—fear of failure, imposter syndrome, or the comfort of familiarity. These barriers once kept us safe, but now they hold us back. We tell ourselves stories: “I can’t do that,” “I’m not ready,” or “It’s not the right time.” But if we took a step back, we’d often realise the gate is open—the only thing keeping us from walking through is the illusion of limitation.
In leadership, career growth, and even relationships, it’s easy to mistake routine for progress. We feel busy, but not fulfilled. We stay where we are, convincing ourselves it’s stability when, in truth, it’s stagnation. Real freedom begins when we question those self-imposed walls and recognise that many of them are figments of fear or past experiences.
From a mental health perspective, this metaphor hits home. Feeling trapped can breed anxiety, frustration, or burnout—not because we lack ability, but because we’ve internalised old scripts about who we are and what’s possible. Breaking that cycle begins with self-awareness: pausing long enough to ask, “What’s really holding me back?”
Maybe it’s not your boss. Maybe it’s not your circumstances. Maybe it’s a belief that no longer fits the person you’re becoming.
So today, I invite you to take a breath and look again at the “gate” in your life. Perhaps, just beyond it, lies the growth, peace, and fulfilment you’ve been searching for—all waiting for you to take that first, sideways step.
The truth is, you are freer than you think.
