Shining a light on lupus documentary premiere

On May 8th, 2026, communities in Kampala will come together for an important and timely conversation, one that is often overlooked but deeply affects many lives: lupus awareness.

Through Shining a Light on Lupus (film link below)

A documentary-led community dialogue initiative under the Sawa Project, this event aims to spark meaningful discussions, challenge harmful misconceptions, and build a more informed and compassionate society.

Lupus, an autoimmune disease, remains widely misunderstood in many communities across Uganda. For many patients, this lack of awareness leads to delayed diagnosis, social stigma, and limited access to appropriate care. The consequences are not only medical but deeply social, affecting dignity, mental health, and quality of life.

This event is designed to change that.

Hosted at the American Center Kampala from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the gathering will feature a screening of the Shining a Light on Lupus documentary, followed by an interactive community dialogue session. Participants will include youth, health advocates, creatives, civil society actors, and individuals directly affected by lupus.

The initiative is guided by four key goals:

  1. Raise awareness and dispel myths surrounding lupus
  2. Provide support and visibility for those living with the condition
  3. Build empathy and understanding within communities
  4. Advocate for the establishment of a lupus and autoimmune disease clinic in Kampala

More than just an event, this dialogue represents a growing movement, one that uses storytelling as a tool for social change and civic engagement. It reflects a broader vision of creating inclusive spaces where communities can come together, listen, learn, and act.

As conversations around health equity and mental well-being continue to gain importance globally, initiatives like this highlight the power of local action in driving systemic change.

Let’s talk. Let’s learn. Let’s end the stigma.
