sajda infront of Allah

Surah 32: As-Sajdah

Taken from: Fi Zilal al-Qur’an by Sayyid Qutb (Shaheed)

Central Theme: Conscious Prostration: The Only Path to Cosmic Harmony

Core Verse:

“Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded of them, fall down in prostration and glorify the praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.” (32:15)

Why is this verse the central axis?

According to Sayyid Qutb (Shaheed), every Surah has a central axis around which all its themes revolve. In Surah As-Sajdah, verse 15 serves as that axis for the following reasons:

1. Psychological and Existential Contrast

The entire Surah presents a decisive struggle between arrogance (istikbar) and humility (khudu‘ / prostration).

Verse 15 represents the peak of this struggle.

Before this, the arrogance of the criminals and their humiliating submission in the Hereafter is described (“their heads lowered” – 32:12).

In complete contrast, verse 15 presents the believers, who willingly and consciously fall into prostration (kharru sujjadan).

These two opposing images encapsulate the entire message of the Surah.

2. The Point of Cosmic Harmony

The Surah begins with the عظمت (grandeur) of creation and the fixed laws of the universe, where everything submits to its Creator.

Verse 15 is the point where human consciousness joins this universal submission, creating harmony.

It is the moment when a human being recognizes their humble origin (from clay and a drop of fluid), breaks arrogance, and willingly submits before the ultimate reality.

3. A Practical Definition of Faith

This verse does not present faith as a mere theoretical concept.

Instead, it sets a practical, physical, and spiritual standard:

Faith is that which makes a person immediately fall into prostration when reminded.

All the qualities mentioned afterward (night prayer, charity, patience, certainty) are practical extensions of this very prostration.
