I am Keturah Shammah, Founder and Executive Director of Girls Education Mission International. For over a decade, my work has placed me at the intersection of conflict, poverty and hope. I have walked alongside girls whose futures were stolen by insecurity, but I have also seen them rise with courage when given the gift of education. My vision of peace is rooted in these lived realities.
Peace to me, is not the silence that follows gunfire.
It is the sound of a girl’s laughter echoing in a classroom.
It is the dignity of a woman who can raise her voice without fear.
It is the quiet strength of a family free from the shadow of violence.
In my community, peace is fragile. I have witnessed classrooms abandoned because of insecurity, families displaced overnight and girls forced into early marriage when schools closed. The pain is real, but so is the resilience. Women become the first responders of peace, feeding their children, holding their homes together and leading with courage where systems fail.
My turning point came when I saw orphaned girls once silenced by fear begin to dream again through mentorship and education. Their determination convinced me that peace is not delivered from conference tables in distant cities. Peace is built daily in small acts of courage by ordinary women and girls who refuse to give up.
Through Girls Education Mission International, I have seen what happens when girls are educated:
They resist early marriage.
They challenge violence.
They step forward as leaders and peacemakers.
Education is more than learning, it is the foundation of peace.
To global leaders I would say, Peace will never be sustainable if women and girls are left out. Invest in education. Fund women-led organizations who are already sowing seeds of peace in their communities. Ensure women have a seat and a voice at every decision-making table. Without women and girls, peace will remain incomplete.
For me, peace is not a distant dream. It is a daily vision:
A girl holding her pen with confidence.
A woman leading her community with strength.
A family free from fear of tomorrow.
Peace is Possible.
