Nora Initiative Applauds Sudanese Journalists Union for Winning the 2026 UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize

The Nora Initiative proudly commends the Sudanese Journalists Union for being awarded the 2026 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, in recognition of their courageous role in defending truth and exposing violations amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

This achievement represents a well-deserved international recognition of the immense sacrifices made by Sudanese journalists, who have continued to carry out their professional duties despite grave risks. Since the outbreak of war in 2023, the Union has documented the killing of 32 journalists and hundreds of violations against media professionals.

In this context, I Nadra Al-Mahdi, as a member of the Gender Secretariat of the Sudanese Journalists Union, express my deep pride and honor in this historic achievement, which reflects the resilience of my colleagues and their unwavering belief in the mission of journalism despite all challenges.

This award not only honors an institution, but also pays tribute to all Sudanese journalists who continue to defend truth and press freedom under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions. It reaffirms the vital role of independent journalism in safeguarding democratic values and amplifying the voices of civilians affected by war.

The initiative further emphasizes that free and independent journalism remains a cornerstone in protecting human rights and promoting justice and peace, especially in times of conflict, when words become responsibility, images become testimony, and journalists stand as the first line of defense for truth.

We also renew our full solidarity with Sudanese journalists and call on the international community to ensure their protection and provide a safe environment that enables them to carry out their work without fear or targeting.

Glory to those who write the truth… despite the danger.
