Teaching art to girls is my way of building peace—one brushstroke at a time
Peace, for me, is not just the absence of war—it is the presence of justice, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls. In Afghanistan, I have seen how women’s voices are silenced, how schools and universities are closed, and how girls’ ambitions are stolen. Yet in these moments of darkness, courage and resilience shine. Peace means that every girl can pick up a brush, a pen, or a book without fear of punishment or restriction.
In my community, peace is the ability for women and girls to gather, learn, and express themselves safely. It is in the laughter of students painting their first artwork, the whispered encouragements between friends sharing ideas, and the joy of seeing young women reclaim spaces that once excluded them. True peace is not only about stopping violence—it is about building environments where creativity, learning, and equality thrive.
Peace for me is deeply connected to my own work and resistance. In Afghanistan, women and girls are still denied the right to education and live under threat, restriction, and violence. I began teaching art in my home, gathering girls who dared to dream, and later opened a gallery and workshop as a sanctuary for creativity and freedom. Peace is freedom when all women, not only in my country but across the world, can learn, create, and choose who they want to be.
Peace for women is a universal struggle. Around the world, millions of women and girls still live under oppression, threats, and discrimination. Peace means recognizing their rights, amplifying their voices, and ensuring they have access to education, work, and leadership. The freedom of one woman is connected to the freedom of all women; the liberation of one community ripples across nations.
Peace in Afghanistan and worldwide means:
• Girls in Afghanistan can go to school without fear and follow their dreams.
• Women in my country can raise their voices and participate actively in society.
• Freedom of choice, creativity, and learning for everyone, without limitation.
• Hope for a future where no Afghan girl or woman is deprived of education.
• A society where justice and equality are upheld for all women and girls.
I dream of a world where every girl can walk into a classroom, a workshop, or a studio without fear; where women can speak freely and lead their communities confidently. This is the peace I fight for—a peace inseparable from women’s freedom and dignity. I believe that when women are free, societies flourish. When we share our stories, teach, and create, we are planting seeds of hope that will grow into a global garden of justice and peace.
Peace in Afghanistan means that girls can attend school without fear, women can raise their voices, and creativity and learning can flourish freely. Peace means hope for a tomorrow where no Afghan girl or woman is deprived of education, and justice and equality prevail for all.
