“Dear Younger Me: You Are More Than Your Beauty”

Dear Younger Me,
If I could sit beside the young girl I once was, I would tell her something I wish I had understood much earlier:
You are more than your face, your body, your beauty and how people see you. You have a mind. Use it. You have a voice. Find it. You have a purpose. Pursue it.
Growing up as a girl, society can sometimes make you believe that your greatest assets are your beauty, your appearance and your ability to fit into expectations. You are taught to look beautiful, behave properly and become the kind of woman people will admire.
There is nothing wrong with being beautiful. I still believe a woman should take care of herself, look good and be confident in who she is.
But I wish someone had told me that beauty should never be the only investment a girl makes in herself.
Dear younger me, read books. Ask questions. Learn a skill. Understand money. Learn how businesses work. Learn technology. Develop your communication skills. Know how to negotiate. Learn to make decisions for yourself. Understand what is happening around you and never be afraid to sit at a table where important decisions are being made.
I would tell every young girl in my community the same thing.
Don't only prepare yourself to be someone's wife. Prepare yourself to be a woman who can build, lead, create, solve problems and make an impact.
Your education is important, but education should not end with a certificate. Keep learning. The world changes, industries change and opportunities change. A girl who continues learning gives herself more choices in life.
I have also come to understand that knowledge gives a woman something powerful: confidence that does not depend on validation.
When you understand your worth, you don't have to prove yourself through your appearance. When you develop skills, you have something to contribute. When you understand money, you can make better financial decisions. When you develop wisdom, you become better equipped to navigate difficult situations.
Today, when I look at girls growing up around me, I see both challenges and progress.
There are more opportunities for girls to learn, access information, build businesses and use technology than there were before. But access alone is not enough. Many girls still need encouragement, mentorship, financial support and safe spaces where they can discover their abilities.
That is why I believe we must teach girls to see themselves beyond their physical appearance.
A girl should know that she can be beautiful and brilliant. Feminine and financially informed. Soft-hearted and strong-minded. Creative and capable.
We need to raise girls who can look in the mirror and appreciate their beauty, but also look beyond the mirror and ask:
What can I contribute?
What problem can I solve?
What can I learn?
What can I build?
Whose life can I make better?
Because a beautiful face may get someone's attention, but knowledge, character, competence and purpose create lasting impact.
So, dear younger me, don't spend all your time becoming beautiful for the world.
Become knowledgeable for yourself. Become capable for your future. Become courageous enough to create your own path.
And to every girl reading this:
Take care of your appearance, but invest even more deeply in your mind.
Your beauty is a gift.
Your mind is an asset.
Your character is your foundation.
Your skills can become your independence.
And your purpose can become your legacy.
You were not born merely to be admired. You were born to become. 💚
With love,
Your older self
