As a co-founder and secretary of our high school mental health club, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles that many teenagers face in today’s society. We often grapple with challenges related to family, friendships, and societal pressures, all while trying to find our own identities.
Recognizing the urgent need for open dialogue, we initiated a program called “PsychTalk.” This safe space allowed students to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment. It was heartening to see peers come together, bravely voicing their concerns and supporting one another.
We welcomed esteemed guests, including psychologist Endalk Assefa, who shared valuable insights on stress management, and Father Daniel Assefa, who introduced us to ancient psychotherapy techniques. Their wisdom provided us with tools to navigate our mental health challenges.
Additionally, we organized discussions led by Advisor Sinework Taye and Daniel Wedajo, focusing on the theme of purpose. These sessions inspired us to explore our passions and understand the importance of mental well-being in pursuing our goals.
Our club also hosted a career exploration event featuring journalist Mersha Kehali, who encouraged students to follow their dreams while emphasizing the importance of mental health in any career path.
Through these initiatives, we aimed to raise awareness about mental health and the unique issues faced by teenagers. We believe that the next generation deserves better—better support, better resources, and a better understanding of mental health.
Together, we’re helping to break the silence surrounding mental health, empowering each other to speak up and seek help when needed. Let’s continue this important conversation and work towards a future where mental health is prioritized and understood.
