Sailing towards a healthier future for island communities

Reducing Maternal Morality on Islands

My initiative stems from the pressing need to promote peace and improve healthcare access in island communities, particularly for pregnant women who face significant challenges in accessing quality medical services. In Uganda's island regions, such as Kalangala, the lack of reliable transportation and high costs associated with accessing healthcare services exacerbate health risks and contribute to maternal mortality. To address this issue, I'm partnering with Shining Hearts Africa to provide boats to island communities, aiming to improve access to healthcare services for pregnant women and reduce mortality rates. By working together, we envision empowering individuals to become agents of peace, fostering a culture of care, compassion and social responsibility that benefits the entire community. This project aligns with my vision of promoting peace, health and well-being in vulnerable populations and I'm committed to making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.

When you ask me what peace means to me on emotional level peace is feeling calm, secure, and content. It's about having a sense of inner tranquility and being able to navigate life's challenges with clarity and composure.

But on practical level peace is having stability, predictability, and safety in daily life. It's about being able to go about my day without fear of violence, insecurity, or disruption.

Personal spending quality time with people in my community especially women, sharing and encouraging each other that's my moment of peace

Because when women are at peace, families thrive and likewise does the community.

The ongoing conflicts in my community create an environment of fear, anxiety especially to expecting mothers. This makes it difficult to feel at peace. Which can erode trust and create feelings of frustration and anger. Witnessing the impact of conflict on loved ones or community members can be a turning point to one's view of peace

Women and girls are often disproportionately affected by conflict, facing increased risks of violence, displacement, and exploitation.

Women often play a crucial role in resisting violence and promoting peace, using our skills and resilience to protect ourelves and the communities.

We can be powerful leaders in promoting peace and reconciliation, using our experiences and perspectives to build bridges and foster understanding
