Growing up, I held on tightly to my dream of earning a university education, building a future I could be proud of, and inspiring other girls to believe they could do the same. But along the way, I learned that the path toward a brighter future isn’t always clear and often demands more strength and support than we think we have.
As a young woman, I encountered obstacles that felt overwhelming. The financial strain of school fees and rent weighed heavily on me, and at times, I wondered if my dreams were slipping through my fingers. My vision of graduating and making a difference felt so close yet so far, and I nearly gave up on my education.
In one of my hardest moments, my uncle stepped in. He offered me a bursary, covering my school fees, and with that, he gave me hope. That gesture of support reminded me of my worth and reignited my desire to keep going. More than the money, it was an act of solidarity that taught me something transformative: we don’t have to fight alone. Sometimes, all it takes is one person who believes in you, one hand reaching out, to help you find your strength again.
Through his support, I began to understand how much power there is in helping each other, especially as women. I realized that my journey wasn’t just my own; it reflected the struggles of so many girls and young women who are held back by barriers, fear, and often, violence. Gender-based violence is a reality that dims the dreams of too many, taking away their chance to live without fear or restraint. It’s a silent threat that lurks in homes, schools, and communities, often hidden yet painfully real.
With this understanding, I knew that my path forward would mean more than pursuing my own dreams. I want to be a leader who lifts up others, a voice that breaks the silence, and a force that stands up for those who cannot yet stand up for themselves. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a reminder that I am not alone in this fight and that there are countless others ready to join hands to create a safer world for women and girls everywhere.
Sharing my story is my way of standing in solidarity with everyone who has felt the sting of fear, doubt, or violence. To those who feel trapped or alone, I want you to know that your journey matters and that there are people who will believe in you, as my uncle did in me. And to those who, like me, are looking for ways to make a difference, I urge you to be that light for someone else. Together, we can create a world where solidarity, empathy, and resilience conquer fear.
As we enter these 16 Days of Activism, let’s commit to making change happen. Support someone in need, raise your voice against violence, and remember that even the smallest act of solidarity can ripple out to create powerful, revolutionary change. This isn’t just a campaign—it’s a movement toward a world where everyone, regardless of gender, can live without fear and flourish.
Let’s stand together, today and every day, until we see the world we dream of come to life.
