Woven from Strength: How Halima Rebuilt Her Life in Rural East Sudan

(A pseudonym is used to protect her privacy)

In rural East Sudan, every small learning space becomes a doorway to hope.

Through Sanabl Al Ataa, we continue supporting women and girls as they reclaim their voices, their rights, and their futures.

#16Days — Together to End Violence Against Women and Girls.

Halima was born in a small rural village in East Sudan, among straw huts and palm-woven mats that welcome guests at the entrance of every home.

She entered the world without a birth certificate, without any official identity—like many girls in remote villages who grow up between fields and open skies, carrying dreams that no one sees.

In her community, when a girl turns twelve, she is prepared for marriage, not for school.

But Halima carried a different dream—one that was born the day she visited relatives in town and saw girls holding notebooks and pens.

She wished she could learn… write her name… read her own world.

Yet her family married her off to a much older man.

And like many painful stories, marriage was not the end of her hardship—it was the beginning.

After two difficult years, Halima found the courage to seek a new life.

She separated from the marriage and decided to rebuild herself from the ground up.

She reached out to Sanabl Al Ataa, where she enrolled in a training course on pastry and bakery skills.

With the organization’s support, she received a small oven and basic tools, and from her simple home in the village, she began baking bread and traditional pastries for the women around her.

Slowly, Halima’s life began to transform.

She created her own income.

She helped her younger sisters continue their education.

She became a symbol of strength for the girls in her village.

Just as a simple palm leaf can be woven into a beautiful mat that brightens a home…

Halima rewove her own life story with determination, courage, and hope.

Sometimes, a small project can change a girl’s entire future—

and light the way for many others after her.

(Name changed for her protection.)
