Wings of Dignity: Community Reproductive Health Awareness and Dignity Project

In many Kenyan communities, especially in less-exposed rural areas, women who do not have children face harsh stigma and social punishment. Some are forced out of their marriages, abandoned by partners, blamed by in-laws, and isolated by their communities. They are labeled barren, cursed, witches, failures, broken, unworthy, and useless women, often accused of having multiple arbotions in the past, spiritual punishment or witchcraft. This cruelty is driven not by truth, but by lack of access to reproductive health knowledge, limited exposure to medical information, and deeply rooted cultural myths about women’s bodies. The result is emotional violence, dignity loss, and silent suffering for women who are blamed for conditions they did not choose and cannot control.

Most of these communities are never given access to accurate reproductive health education. No one explains the medical realities behind infertility and pregnancy loss. No one teaches about conditions like ectopic pregnancies, recurrent miscarriages, congenital womb differences such as heart-shaped wombs (bicornuate uterus), septate uterus, one-sided wombs (unicornuate uterus), blocked fallopian tubes, fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, cervical insufficiency, hormonal disorders, autoimmune conditions, infections, implantation disorders, and reproductive trauma. Instead, people learn through rumors, cultural beliefs, fear, and inherited myths passed down through generations. In the absence of medical information, spiritual explanations replace science, blame replaces understanding, and women’s bodies become the easiest place to project guilt and shame. Without access to doctors, reproductive health education, community sensitization, and trusted health information, communities are left to interpret what they do not understand, and women continue to suffer for conditions that are medical, biological, and human not moral or spiritual.

OUR Goal

The Wings of Dignity initiative aims to lift women from stigma to empowerment by educating the Kabandi local community in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya, about reproductive health, fertility challenges, and the medical realities behind pregnancy loss and childlessness. The initiative will provide accurate information through community dialogues, storytelling, workshops, and sensitization campaigns. By challenging harmful myths, reducing stigma, and fostering compassion, the project seeks to transform community attitudes and create supportive environments.
