Wings of Dignity

Proud to continue our collaboration on the Wings of Dignity initiative with Faith Gift Wangari under the World Pulse Stronger Together framework.

Our first community engagement marked a powerful beginning.

In preparation for this session, we invested time in deep research on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), intentionally breaking down complex medical concepts into simple, clear language that could be understood within the local context. We knew that for this conversation to matter, it had to be accessible, respectful, and grounded in the everyday realities of the women we were engaging.

What we encountered was both eye-opening and deeply moving.

Most of the women had never heard of PCOS. Not even once. The symptoms they had experienced or witnessed—irregular periods, difficulty conceiving, hormonal changes—had never been explained through a medical lens. Instead, these realities had been shaped by cultural narratives that often labeled women as barren, cursed, or “not real women.” The emotional weight of these labels was evident, carried quietly, and often alone.

As we created space for open conversation, we invited the women to share their thoughts and feelings after the session.

Many were visibly shocked to learn that PCOS is a real medical condition. There was disbelief, silence, and then a slow unfolding of questions. Some expressed confusion, others relief, and many sat with the realization that what they had been blamed for might never have been their fault.

It became clear that while this was only a first meeting, it had already begun to challenge long-held beliefs.

At the same time, this experience revealed a gap we cannot ignore.

To deepen impact and ensure accuracy, we made a deliberate decision to involve local healthcare workers in our next engagement. We are planning to collaborate with nurses and reproductive health specialists who will walk alongside us in this journey—helping translate medical knowledge into language that is not only understandable, but also culturally sensitive and affirming.

This next step is not just about information. It is about trust. It is about bridging the gap between science and community, and ensuring that women receive knowledge from both informed and relatable voices.

This first meeting reminded us of something powerful: before change happens in systems, it begins in awareness. In a room. In a conversation. In a moment where a woman hears, perhaps for the first time, that her body is not broken.

And that she is not alone.

Our journey continues—with intention, with collaboration, and with an unwavering commitment to restoring dignity through knowledge.
