Why not Respect My Choice to Wear My Hijab?

“Send me a photo without your hijab.”

It was a simple sentence from a friend who described himself as “anti-religious.”

He probably thought it was harmless. Modern. Open-minded, even.

But the moment stayed with me longer than he could imagine.

I began asking myself: Why do some people speak passionately about freedom, yet struggle to respect a woman’s choice when that choice is connected to faith? Why is removing the hijab sometimes seen as liberation, while choosing to wear it is treated as something that must be questioned, challenged, or overcome?

I realized that discrimination can wear many faces. Sometimes it appears openly through laws and exclusion. Other times, it hides behind the language of progress and freedom.

The truth is simple: respecting women means respecting their choices — even when those choices are different from our own.

My hijab is not an invitation for debate every time I enter a conversation. It is part of my identity, my comfort, my spirituality, and my personal decision. I do not ask others to live like me. I only ask not to be reduced because of it.

Freedom loses its meaning when it is offered selectively.

A woman without a hijab deserves dignity and respect.

A woman with a hijab deserves the same.

But perhaps the deeper questions are these:

When does “fighting religion” become discrimination against religious people themselves?

Why are some women celebrated for expressing freedom, while others are questioned for expressing faith?

Can society truly call itself inclusive if it only respects choices that fit a certain worldview?

And most importantly — are we really defending women’s rights, or are we simply deciding which women deserve them?
