When She Almost Gave Up, I Refused To

There was a season when many young women around me were quietly breaking.

They had applied for scholarships. For visas. For volunteering placements. For seasonal jobs. For opportunities abroad that could change their families’ futures. And then came the silence. The rejections. The delays.

One woman in particular stands out to me.

She had sold personal belongings to fund application fees. She had faced mockery from people who told her, “You’re dreaming too big.” After months of waiting without feedback, she called me one evening and said she was done. She was tired of hoping.

I listened.

Then I reminded her who she was.

I helped her review her documents again. We rewrote her motivation letter. I connected her to new platforms. I shared every opportunity I could find. I stayed up late sending links, voice notes, encouragement. Sometimes what I gave wasn’t money — it was belief.

And she applied again.

Months later, she got the visa.

Today she works legally abroad. She now supports her younger siblings’ education. She has become the encourager in her own community.

But she was not the only one.

I have supported girls who needed help writing scholarship essays. Young teachers who needed certification links. Girls who simply needed someone to say, “Don’t quit yet.”

What I gave was information, time, strategy, and faith.

The ripple?

Women who now mentor others. Families who are financially stronger. Girls who stayed in school because someone paid attention. Dreams that survived long enough to become real.

Support does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like answering messages at midnight. Sometimes it looks like forwarding a link. Sometimes it looks like refusing to let another woman shrink herself.

I believe when one woman rises, she pulls another with her.

And I refuse to climb alone.
