Title: Their Crime Is Not Their Period – A Story from SHEcare / The Industrious Founder Africa
When we walked into Embu Women’s Prison carrying boxes of sanitary pads, we were not walking in as visitors.
We were walking in as women for women.
At SHEcare / The Industrious Founder Africa, we believe dignity should never be taken away not by poverty, not by stigma, and not even by prison walls.
Behind those gates were women who had made mistakes, yes.
But they were still women.
They still bleed every month.
And their periods are not crimes.
One woman held a packet of pads and said quietly,
“Now I won’t be ashamed when my time comes.”
Another said,
“We use pieces of cloth when we have nothing. Sometimes we hide because of the smell.”
Those words broke us.
Menstruation in prison is not just about blood.
It is about humiliation.
It is about fear of stains.
It is about infections.
It is about feeling less than human.
A woman should never be punished twice — once by the justice system and again by her own body.
Giving out sanitary pads was not just an act of donation.
It was an act of restoration.
It was telling them:
You are still a woman. You are still worthy. You are still seen.
Inside that prison yard, uniforms disappeared.
We were not inmates and visitors.
We were women standing together in shared pain, shared biology, and shared humanity.
But this is only one prison.
There are many more.
And every month, the need returns.
At SHEcare / The Industrious Founder Africa, we are asking for support to continue reaching women behind bars with menstrual products and dignity kits. We need partners, donors, and compassionate hearts who believe that a woman’s period should never be another punishment.
Your support can help: – Provide sanitary pads
– Protect women from infections
– Restore dignity
– End menstrual shame in prisons
Because menstruation is not a sentence.
Because dignity should not be locked away.
Because even behind bars, a woman is still a woman.
If you would like to support this work, please stand with SHEcare / The Industrious Founder Africa and help us keep dignity flowing where freedom does not.
