Tikwaniritse Teens empowernment initiative

This was our first session.. 30 participants benefitted from the session.

Tikwaniritse Teen Empowerment is a grassroot community based youth initiative in Malawi dedicated to improving the health, education, protection, and overall well-being of children and adolescents. The initiative was established in response to the growing challenges facing young people, including early and forced marriage, abuse and exploitation, limited access to sexual and reproductive health information, mental health stigma, school dropouts, and the absence of safe, supportive spaces where teenagers can express themselves and receive guidance. These challenges continue to undermine children’s rights and limit their ability to reach their full potential.

Tikwaniritse works to address these realities by creating safe, inclusive, and youth friendly platforms where children and adolescents can learn, share experiences, and build confidence. The initiative uses participatory and creative approaches such as dialogue sessions, drama, poetry, storytelling, role play, and interactive games to engage young people in discussions about child rights, education, mental health, life skills, and personal development. These methods ensure that learning is not only informative but also engaging, culturally sensitive, and responsive to the real life experiences of young people.

A central pillar of Tikwaniritse is the belief that children thrive when they are both empowered with knowledge and supported emotionally and practically. As such, sessions integrate education with psychosocial support, encouraging young people to speak openly about the challenges they face at home, at school, and in their communities. Through guided discussions and peer interaction, participants build self esteem, communication skills, and resilience. They are also equipped with information on where and how to seek help, report abuse, and access support services.

The initiative successfully conducted its first community session in Chirimba, reaching 30 children and adolescents. This initial session focused on child rights, early marriage prevention, and the importance of education, and created a rare opportunity for young people to openly express their views and concerns. Faith leaders who attended the session played a key role in reinforcing the messages delivered. They spoke strongly about the responsibility of communities to protect children, condemned child marriage and abuse, and encouraged young people to remain in school and report any violations of their rights. Their involvement strengthened community ownership, increased trust in the initiative, and demonstrated the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in child protection and empowerment work.

Building on the success of the Chirimba session, Tikwaniritse entered 2026 with renewed momentum and a clearer program direction. The initiative has already begun implementing school pledge campaigns and community awareness activities focused on ending child marriage and promoting the importance of education. These activities engage learners, teachers, parents, and community members in public commitments to protect children’s rights, support school attendance, and challenge harmful cultural norms. The pledges also serve as advocacy tools, sparking dialogue within schools and surrounding communities and reinforcing collective responsibility for the well-being of children.

As part of its 2026 program plan, Tikwaniritse will conduct structured empowerment sessions in four primary schools, targeting children at a critical stage of their physical, emotional, and social development. These school-based sessions will provide age appropriate education on child rights, mental well being, personal safety, life skills, and the value of education. They will also identify vulnerable learners and link them, where possible, to relevant services and community support structures. By working directly within schools, Tikwaniritse aims to reach children early, before risks such as early marriage, school dropout, and exploitation escalate.

In addition to education and psychosocial support, Tikwaniritse integrates practical assistance into its programming. During sessions, participants are provided with sanitary pads, exercise books, and refreshments. This component is essential in addressing everyday barriers that prevent many children particularly girls from fully participating in educational and empowerment activities. Access to sanitary pads supports dignity, school attendance, and confidence, while the provision of basic learning materials eases the burden on vulnerable families. Refreshments ensure that children are able to engage meaningfully, especially in communities where food insecurity is common.

Tikwaniritse also places strong emphasis on community engagement and sustainability. Faith leaders, community volunteers, teachers, and youth mentors are engaged in sessions and awareness activities to ensure that messages delivered to children are reinforced at household and community levels. Over time, the initiative aims to train youth facilitators and community champions who can continue peer education, advocacy, and mentorship, creating a locally driven movement for child protection, education, and adolescent well-being.

Although still at an early stage, Tikwaniritse has already demonstrated its relevance, acceptance, and potential for impact. Young participants have shown increased confidence, greater awareness of their rights, and willingness to speak out against harmful practices. Community stakeholders have expressed appreciation for the initiative and interest in collaboration. However, the demand for services far exceeds the initiative’s current capacity.

With adequate financial and technical support, Tikwaniritse Teen Empowerment seeks to expand its reach to more schools and communities, strengthen the quality and consistency of its sessions, increase the provision of essential resources, and build a structured, sustainable program model. Through these efforts, Tikwaniritse envisions a future where children and adolescents are educated, mentally healthy, protected, and empowered to shape their own lives and contribute positively to their communities..
