She sat quietly in class, shifting uncomfortably in her seat and avoiding eye contact. No one seemed to notice that something was wrong. But I did.
If I hadn’t noticed, she might have spent the rest of the day embarrassed and alone.
At first, I thought she might just be having a bad day. But as I watched her, I began to sense that something else was wrong. Sometimes, as girls, we recognize certain situations without a word being spoken.
I gently asked if she was okay. She quickly nodded, but the look on her face told a different story.
After a moment, I quietly asked her a simple question:
“Do you need a sanitary pad?”
Her eyes widened in surprise. For a few seconds, she said nothing. Then she slowly nodded.
She had started her period unexpectedly and didn’t have a pad. She was too shy and perhaps too embarrassed to ask anyone for help.
I gave her one of mine and quietly showed her where she could go to take care of herself.
It was such a small thing. Just a Sanitary pad.
But in that moment, it meant so much more. It meant relief. It meant dignity. It meant she no longer had to sit there in fear or embarrassment.
In many communities in Cameroon and other parts of the world, girls still struggle silently with menstrual challenges due to stigma and lack of access to sanitary products. That day reminded me that sometimes the support another girl needs is not grand or complicated, sometimes it is simply noticing, caring, and quietly stepping in.
That day I shared a pad, but more importantly, I shared solidarity because no girl deserves to bleed in silence.
