In a world marked by conflict, climate change, and humanitarian crises, many people question whether the United Nations (UN) is still relevant. From my perspective, the years between 2020 and 2026 have shown that despite its limitations, the UN remains one of the most important platforms for global cooperation.
The global COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how interconnected our world has become. During this crisis, agencies within the UN system, including the World Health Organization, worked to coordinate global health responses and share critical information. While individual countries adopted their own strategies, the UN system played a vital role in guiding international dialogue and cooperation.
Another area where the UN continues to demonstrate relevance is in humanitarian work and peacekeeping. Through missions authorized by the United Nations Security Council, UN peacekeepers are deployed to conflict zones around the world to protect civilians and maintain fragile ceasefires. Often referred to as the “Blue Helmets,” these personnel work under the framework of the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, helping societies transition from conflict toward peace and stability.
Peacekeeping missions in regions such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo illustrate the ongoing importance of these efforts. For instance, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan has played a key role in protecting civilians and supporting peace processes in a country struggling with internal conflict. These missions do not always provide immediate solutions, but they help prevent further escalation and create space for dialogue and reconciliation.
With regard to India’s legacy in these peace mission, it has contributed significantly to these missions by sending troops and police personnel. Such participation reflects a collective commitment to global peace and stability, demonstrating that maintaining peace is a shared responsibility. UNIFIL, UNTSO, MONUSCO, UNMISS are a few of UN peace keeping mission that have Indian presence, as of reports in 2024.
At the same time, the UN continues to provide leadership on global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development. Through initiatives like the Sustainable Development Goals, the organization encourages nations to work together toward reducing poverty, protecting the environment, and building more inclusive societies.
Critics often highlight the UN’s limitations, particularly when political disagreements among major powers prevent decisive action. While these criticisms are valid, they should not overshadow the organization’s broader role as a global forum where nations can engage in dialogue rather than confrontation.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the United Nations lies in its ability to bring countries together under a shared vision of peace, human dignity, and cooperation. In an increasingly polarized world, such a platform is more necessary than ever.
As we reflect on the global developments of the past few years, it becomes clear that the United Nations is not merely an institution of the past. Rather, it continues to serve as a vital space where humanity can collectively address the challenges of our time.
