Starting over when you lose everything

My mom and me facing life together, one day at a time.

A year ago, my life looked very different. I had a good-paying job in Nigeria and felt secure about my future. I had plans, stability, and a clear direction. When I came home to Ghana for what was meant to be a short visit, I never imagined that everything was about to change.

During that visit, my mother’s health suddenly deteriorated. What started as concern quickly became a series of hospital visits, tests, and sleepless nights. Eventually, the doctors discovered she had a blood clot that left her unable to walk. In that moment, my priorities shifted completely. My plans, career, and financial stability were no longer the focus, my mother’s health was.

I chose to stay, even when calls from Nigeria kept nudging me back.

It wasn’t an easy decision. There were many moments when I questioned whether I had made the right choice. Fear often gripped me as I looked at the uncertainty ahead. The future that once felt bright and predictable suddenly looked dark and unclear.

Over time, the hospital bills and care expenses consumed all the savings I had worked so hard to build. Starting over financially felt overwhelming. Some days I felt like hope was slipping away.

But giving up was never truly an option.

Today, I am rebuilding my life step by step. While caring for my mother, I am working toward financial stability again by exploring online work opportunities and starting a small dessert business. It is not easy balancing caregiving with trying to create a new path, but every small step forward reminds me that resilience is possible even in the hardest seasons.

My story right now is about starting over but it is also about courage, love, and refusing to give up even when life changes unexpectedly.
