WICOT Uganda staff receiving birthing kits from BKFA
This initiative supports poor and vulnerable pregnant mothers in remote areas of Kyenjojo District, Uganda, who cannot afford basic delivery supplies. About 7 out of 10 expectant mothers give birth without access to essential materials such as clean gloves, soap, sterile cord ties, and clean delivery surfaces. This exposes both mothers and newborns to serious infections and preventable complications.
The project focuses on women living in poverty, especially in rural and hard-to-reach communities where access to well-equipped health facilities is limited. Many rely on home births or overcrowded health centers that lack adequate supplies. As a result, deliveries often take place in unhygienic conditions, increasing the risk of sepsis, postpartum hemorrhage, and neonatal infections.
To address this gap, the initiative distributes clean birthing kits containing essential items that promote hygienic delivery, including plastic delivery sheets, soap, sterile gloves, clean cord ties, and sterile blades. Each kit is designed for use during one delivery, whether at home or in a health facility. The project also provides simple, culturally appropriate health education on safe delivery practices, personal hygiene, and newborn care, delivered in local languages.
Community leaders, health workers, and women’s groups help identify the most vulnerable mothers to ensure support reaches those most in need. This community-based approach strengthens trust, participation, and sustainability.
Overall, the initiative reduces the risk of infection, minimizes birth complications, and promotes dignity and safety for mothers during childbirth. By combining practical supplies with health education, the project contributes to healthier mothers, safer births, and stronger communities.
