The world often defines peace simply as the absence of war, the quiet cessation of overt fighting. Yet, this definition is deeply insufficient, particularly in vibrant, high-density urban centres like Lagos, Nigeria. True, Positive Peace, as conceptualized by peace theorists, is the presence of the attitudes, institutions, and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies. It is a proactive effort to remove the roots of conflict, inequality, and systemic harm.
In communities struggling with myriad social pressures, achieving this higher form of peace requires initiatives that dive deep beneath the surface of immediate violence. This is the crucial mission undertaken by the Menitos Charity Foundation through its flagship program, the "War Against Child Abuse and Drug Abuse" (WACANDA), which serves as a resource in generational peace-building in the Agege area of Lagos State.
Agege: A Microcosm of Societal Stress
Agege, with its bustling markets, high youth population, and rapid urbanization, is a community rich in potential but highly susceptible to the corrosive effects of structural violence. Here, peace is not disturbed by tanks or bombs, but by the quiet, insidious threats of:
Child Abuse: Endangering the physical and psychological safety of the next generation.
Drug Abuse: Eroding the health, stability, and future productivity of youth and families.
These issues are not merely personal tragedies; they are systemic breaches of peace. A child who grows up traumatized by abuse, or a young adult trapped in addiction, cannot fully contribute to a peaceful and prosperous community. Their struggle is the community’s vulnerability, ensuring the cycle of instability continues into the next generation.
WACANDA: Building the Pillars of Positive Peace
The Menitos Charity Foundation recognized that lasting peace in Agege could not be achieved through security measures alone, but through fundamental social intervention. WACANDA was established to directly address the two most significant threats to Agege’s future stability.
The initiative focuses on three core areas: Education, Intervention(Respond), and Rehabilitation.
Education and Advocacy: WACANDA runs sustained community campaigns, workshops, and school-based programs to raise awareness about the signs and devastating effects of child abuse, encouraging reporting and protective behavior.
Intervention Services: Providing safe spaces, counseling, and support network for survivors of abuse, breaking the cycle of silence and trauma.
Rehabilitation: Offering structured programs through collaborations for young people struggling with drug addiction, helping them reclaim their health and prepare for meaningful reintegration into society.
The strategic direction o f this critical work is led by Dr. (h.c.)Toluwalope Daramola, a Rotarian and an active member of Rotary Action Group For Peace, (RAGFP)Nigeria Chapter, who serves as both the National Project Lead for WACANDA and the Executive Director of Menitos Charity Foundation. Her vision is centred on the principle that to build a peaceful future, one must protect and empower the children of today.
The Tool for Generational Peace
The genius of the WACANDA initiative lies in its focus on generational peace. By investing in the protection and recovery of the youth in Agege, the foundation is not just solving present problems; it is de-escalating future conflicts.
When a child abuse case is successfully handled, a potential source of future trauma-driven crime or anti-social behaviour is neutralized. When a young person is successfully rehabilitated from drug abuse, they move from being a burden on the community to being a productive stakeholder.
This holistic approach transforms Agege from a site of structural vulnerability into a hub of resilience. The peace being built is not enforced; it is cultivated. It is peace rooted in public health, safety, and psychological well-being. It is the peace of knowing one’s rights are protected, the peace of feeling safe at home, and the peace of having a hopeful future.
Menitos Charity Foundation’s WACANDA initiative in Agege provides a compelling model for global peace-building efforts. It demonstrates unequivocally that genuine peace is an ongoing war against the conditions that foster violence. By battling the silent scourges of child abuse and drug abuse, Dr. (h.c.)Daramola and her team are laying the unshakable foundation for a truly peaceful, resilient, and prosperous generation.
