Peace is a consious effort

Peace: A Living Spirit, Not Merely the Absence of War

To me, peace is not simply the silence that follows conflict. It is the sacred rhythm of harmony between the soul, the land, and the people. In African spirituality, peace is alive -it breathes through our relationships, our prayers, our labor, and our respect for nature. It is the melody of balance that connects us to our Creator and to the wisdom of our ancestors.

Peace is the sound of children laughing after a nourishing meal, the hands of women tilling the soil, and the shared prayers that rise from every heart seeking truth. It is not an abstract idea or a distant dream, it is a state of divine order that we must each nurture within ourselves before we can extend it to the world.

The African Spiritual Understanding of Peace

African spirituality teaches that everything in creation is interconnected - the seen and unseen, the human and the divine, the earth and the spirit. In many African traditions, peace is described as “Jàmm” in Wolof, or "Ubuntu" in Southern Africa - meaning “I am because we are.” It is a philosophy that insists upon collective well-being and harmony.

Peace in this sense is not passive. It demands truth, justice, and compassion. It calls for living in right relationship - with ourselves, with others, and with the earth that sustains us. The ancestors remind us that a person cannot know peace while ignoring the suffering of another. True peace is an act of balance: between giving and receiving, between speech and silence, between the needs of the spirit and the needs of the body.

In my lived experience as a spiritual woman in Senegal and traveling in several countries in Africa, I believe with absolute certainty that peace is not just the absence of conflict but the presence of divine order, harmony, and community rooted in respect for nature, ancestors, and human dignity.

This peaceful philosophy emphasizes balance between humans and nature, spirit and matter, giving and receiving. Unlike Western interpretations of peace as a political or external state I believe and strive to practice peace as a way of life - living truthfully, justly and right relations with others. Although this way mentioned is easier said than done and takes a very conscious effort.

Women as the Bearers of Peace

Women have long been recognized as the mothers of peace - the ones who sustain life, nurture communities, and pass down wisdom. In my own work through Queen Sheba Village in Senegal, Ghana, and the United States, I have witnessed how empowering women leads to peace that endures.

Peace as Action: The Role of Women and Community

Women are considered the mothers of peace - nurturers of both family and land, feeding children, teaching agriculture, empowering women, and preserving dignity. True peace is economic empowerment, education, and spiritual awareness combined.

When a woman is educated, her family thrives. When a mother can feed her children, the community breathes easier. Our agricultural and food education programs teach women and youth that peace begins with nourishment - of the body, the mind, and the soul. When women grow the food that feeds their children, they are not only ending hunger; they are cultivating peace from the ground up.

This is why the construction of our Women and Girls Education and Empowerment Center in Senegal is so vital. It is not simply a building - it is a sanctuary of peace. Each classroom, each garden bed, and each shared meal represents a seed of harmony for the next generation.

Peace as a Spiritual Calling

African spirituality reminds us that peace must first begin within. When the heart is restless, the world appears chaotic; when the spirit is anchored, even the storm brings wisdom. Prayer, meditation, and acts of service are not separate paths - they are one and the same. Every good deed, every sincere word, and every compassionate action contributes to the collective energy of peace.

Spiritual roots of peace teaches that peace comes from alignment with ancestral wisdom and divine purpose. Meditation, prayer, and service are not separate acts - they are expressions of living in peace. The drum, song, and rhythm of life all carry vibrations of unity and healing.

In my personal journey, I have learned that to live in peace is to live in gratitude - for our ancestors, our traditions, and the beauty of creation. Peace is the drumbeat that calls us back to our purpose. It is the reminder that love is stronger than fear, and that humility opens the door to divine understanding.

A Call for Global Harmony

As the world continues to face conflict, inequality, and spiritual disconnection, we must return to the ancient African wisdom that teaches: peace cannot be given by governments alone - it must be "grown" in the hearts of people. We must remember that every human being carries a divine spark of goodness capable of transforming darkness into light.

Let us build bridges, not walls. Let us share knowledge, not greed. Let us empower women, uplift youth, and protect our planet - for these are the sacred paths to lasting peace.

My Vision of Peace

Defining Peace through African Spiritual Wisdom and Humanitarian Action

“Peace, to me, is when the heart rests in truth, when the land feeds its people, and when the spirit of our ancestors smiles upon us because we have chosen to live in harmony.”

May this peace flow from Africa to every corner of the world, reminding us that unity is sacred, service is love, and that true peace is not only possible - it is our divine inheritance.

Furthermore I conclude with a call to action - to cultivate inner peace through service , compassion, and love for humanity. When empowered women can financially support themselves and their families they are ensured health, secured education, child protection and upward mobility in society, serve community, combat poverty hunger and violence.
