PEACE AND POWER WITHIN

Water is calming.

“Peace begins within me, but it becomes unstoppable when women rise together to challenge the systems that silence us.”

The story begins on a humid Thursday morning in Kampala, when I stood in a crowded taxi park feeling the weight of two worlds on my shoulders: the one I lived in, and the one I was fighting for. On my way to a community meeting about violence prevention, I watched a young girl flinch at a man’s raised voice and felt a familiar fire rise within me. It was a reminder of why I had joined the feminist movement in the first place, not because I was unafraid, but because I had once been that girl. My journey didn’t start in a conference room or a strategy session; it began years earlier in the quiet moments when I realized that survival had taught me everything I needed to know about resistance. M story, like that of so many women, is a testament to how personal pain can transform into collective power.

I have always carried a deep longing for inner peace; a quiet center within me that I return to for grounding and clarity. Yet the world around me often denies that us peace. I work in contexts where power is unevenly distributed, where patriarchy shapes daily realities, and where women’s voices are dismissed or minimized. Standing in these spaces, I have felt the tension between my inner calm and the turbulence of the systems around me.

Instead of letting that dissonance pull me apart, I learned to align my inner peace with purpose. I chose to step into the struggle; not as someone immune to the chaos, but as a woman determined to transform it. I began working with women across communities, creating spaces where they could unpack the weight of patriarchal norms, reclaim their agency, and support one another through shared healing.

In peace and healing circles, leadership workshops, Rethink and Reenergize sessions, and community dialogues, I witnessed something powerful: when women come together, they challenge entrenched power dynamics not through domination, but through collective wisdom, resilience, and compassion. Their stories of survival and courage reminded me that inner peace is not passive, it is active, intentional, and often revolutionary.

Every conversation, every breakthrough, every moment of solidarity affirmed that peace is possible when women are empowered to lead and challenge oppressive systems. My inner peace has become my compass, guiding me as I work alongside women to build communities where justice, dignity, and equality are not aspirations but lived realities.

Through this journey, I’ve learned that while patriarchy and power imbalances remain formidable forces, they are not unchangeable.

Peace begins within us, but it grows into a transformative force when women rise together to confront and reshape the world around us.
