Bangladeshi photographer Oviul Maruf continues to shape his evolving series Nocturn. With the second photograph, Midnight Cycle, the project begins to reveal a deeper sense of intimacy—one that moves beyond visual beauty and into memory, feeling, and experience.

Captured on the night before Eid, Midnight Cycle is rooted in a moment that many experience but few attempt to preserve. The air was filled with subtle excitement—fireworks flickering in the distance, laughter echoing softly, and a shared anticipation of celebration. Yet, instead of documenting the obvious, Maruf turns his focus toward something more fragile: the emotion before the moment fully arrives.

Using long exposure, he transforms a fleeting action into a continuous loop of light. The circular motion becomes more than just a visual element—it reflects repetition, anticipation, and the quiet rhythm of thought. What lasts only seconds in reality is extended into something almost timeless, as if the moment refuses to end.

As an independent photographer, Maruf’s approach is deeply personal. He is drawn to in-between spaces—the moments that exist just before something meaningful happens. In Midnight Cycle, that philosophy becomes clear. The photograph does not attempt to capture Eid itself, but rather the feeling of standing at its threshold.

The glowing circle at the center of the frame feels both controlled and spontaneous, echoing the duality of celebration and solitude. It suggests movement, yet remains contained. It is energetic, yet surrounded by silence. This contrast gives the image its emotional weight, inviting viewers to step into that same paused moment of anticipation.

Within the broader Nocturn series, Midnight Cycle introduces a new layer of storytelling. It shifts the narrative from simply observing the night to experiencing it. The series begins to feel less like a collection of images and more like a journey through states of mind—where each photograph holds a different emotion shaped by darkness.

Through this work, Oviul Maruf reminds us that photography is not only about what we see, but also about what we feel and remember. Midnight Cycle stands as a quiet yet powerful example of how a single moment—when seen with intention—can become something lasting.

In this expansion of Nocturn, the night does not end. It loops, it breathes, and it continues—just like the circle of light that defines it.
