Filming in Machakos

In February 2025 , I got an email from Canada , a request to be part of a documentary filming on Black Food Sovereignty .I got introduced to the For the Culture series which focuses on the Black community. This series would delve into seed sovereignty and agroecology. Subject matters which I engage in with smallholder farmers, school pupils and Indigenous Peoples.

In April , the filming was done , Amanda of the For the Culture with Amanda Parris and her colleagues travelled from Canada to Machakos , where Haki Nawiri Afrika (hakinawiriafrika.org) works with smallholder farmers on agroecology. Interviews were done , experiences were shared on seed sovereignty and how indigenous seed and food systems are superior particularly in the wake of climate crisis.

A dialogue with Amanda ensued on the politics of food. Thorny realities such as why should Africa be conditioned to be a primary producer of raw materials and an importer of finished products are exorbitant prices, why should the richest continent in the world and with 60 percent arable land still be importing food and also be on the global hunger map. This dialogue gathered 1 million likes on Instagram. To date this still seems unreal .

This global response gave me hope that my work is not in vain, the world is watching .

I have renewed energy to continue discussing and passing knowledge on agroecology because food is political. I'm calling upon interested parties to come join our cause in advancing food and seed sovereignty in Kenya.
