no hijab day
No Hijab Day was founded in 2018 by Yasmine Mohammed in direct protest against World Hijab Day, an annual event that aims to "normalize" the hijab. For instance, World Hijab Day has had ads declaring that women who wear hijab are "Beautiful. Confident. Empowered."
Islam claims modesty is for both men and women. But girls and women are expected and also forced to cover up in Muslim families and countries, as if our existence is the problem, not Islam and Islamic patriarchy. Hijab is in fact sexism against women, and a tool for Islamic regimes to oppress societies, secular activists, and human rights and feminist movements.
How many more of us must be threatened or killed for the world to acknowledge the harm being perpetuated against girls and women who want their freedom from hijab, purity culture, and Islam?
In previous years, No Hijab Day was only online. We removed our hijabs and published the images on social media, which is a high-risk action for many women. This year, we are going live. If you have the freedom to protest in real time, join us!
