Nigeria: Choosing My Voice in a World That Silences Women

Violence against women does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it lives in silence. In dismissal. In the expectation that women should endure pain quietly and move on.
I have seen it. I have lived around it.
And I refuse to accept it.
Growing up, I learned early that women were expected to be strong but rarely protected. Pain was normalized. Speaking up was often discouraged. Many women around me carried emotional wounds silently—out of fear, dependence, or the belief that endurance was the price of survival. There were seasons in my own life when everything felt uncertain. Financial pressure, emotional exhaustion, and unanswered questions about my future weighed heavily on me. I doubted my worth. I questioned whether my voice mattered, or if speaking out would only bring more struggle.
But something inside me refused to stay quiet forever. I watched how easily women’s pain was dismissed—how abuse was excused, how victims were blamed, and how silence was praised as maturity. Slowly, I realized that silence was not protecting women; it was protecting harm.
That realization changed me. I turned to writing when speaking felt difficult. Through words, I began to understand that my experiences were not insignificant. They were shared realities. Writing gave me clarity, healing, and the courage to claim my voice—not just for myself, but for women who are still afraid to speak.
Today, I choose courage over comfort. I use my voice to highlight the struggles women face, especially in environments where abuse is normalized and accountability is rare. I believe storytelling is powerful—it exposes injustice, builds connection, and creates pathways to change.
This is why spaces like World Pulse matter. Here, women are not silenced. Here, our stories are not minimized. Here, pain is not ignored—it is transformed into purpose and collective action. I speak for women who are told to stay quiet to keep peace. I write for girls who fear their truth will be dismissed. I advocate for dignity, safety, and opportunity because no woman deserves to live in fear.
Violence against women is not culture. Silence is not strength. Endurance should never replace justice.
This is my call to action:
Speak out against abuse in all its forms.
Support survivors, not stigma.
Challenge harmful norms that excuse violence.
Create safe spaces where women can share, heal, and lead.
Change begins when we listen.
Healing begins when we believe women.
Progress happens when we act—together.
To every woman reading this: your pain does not disqualify you. Your past does not silence you. Your voice is needed.
Let us choose courage intentionally.
Let us protect women boldly.
Let us build a world where women are respected, supported, and free.
