In the village of Koupela, in the department of Bouaflé, Mariam grew up carrying a silent burden on her shoulders.
While other young girls dreamed of school, a future, or simply freedom, Mariam lived with a constant fear: being forced into marriage with a man much older than her.
Her destiny already seemed written by tradition and by the decisions of the adults around her.
At a very young age, Mariam understood that her voice mattered little. Her dreams even less.
Then one day, a door opened.
That door was the Femmes Plus Social Institute and its sewing workshop.
When Mariam arrived at our center, she was shy, fragile, almost broken. In her eyes was the anguish of a life she had never chosen.
We did not only teach her how to sew.
We taught her that she had value.
That she could learn a profession.
That she could earn a dignified living.
That she could say no to a destiny imposed on her.
Week after week, Mariam began to change.
Her hands were learning how to transform fabrics, but her heart was rebuilding too.
Every dress she sewed became a victory.
Every creation became proof that she could build her own future.
Today, Mariam is no longer that young girl condemned to silence.
She has skills.
She has dignity.
She has a choice.
And above all, she escaped forced marriage.
Through the sewing school of the Femmes Plus Social Institute, we do more than train seamstresses.
We also protect dreams.
We restore hope to vulnerable young girls.
We transform lives.
Behind every sewing machine, there is sometimes a story of survival.
Behind every apprentice is a young girl simply searching for a chance.
Mariam is one of those stories.
But there are still many other Mariams waiting for someone to reach out a hand to them.
