Life Skills Mentoring Workshop

Skills Miaishani is a mentoring platform providing teens and youths with life skills on the areas of Safety, Sexual & Reproductive Health, Financial Literacy and Legal life skills, i.e labour, employment and intellectual property.
Through promotion of the Work Ready Program, Skills Maishani carried out life skills mentoring sessions targeting 50 youths who have undergone technical and/or vocational training and some continuing with College. The sessions were held twice, mid course and after completion of their training.
The main objective of the life skills mentoring sessions was to;
- Equipp youths with essential life skills necessary in their social and professional lives which in turn, would aid in problem solving and decision making in their places of work.
- The sessions were an opportunity at having an open dialogue with young people on the challenges in their professional lives.
The life skills mentoring workshop further;
Capacity built young people with work readiness life skill in order to enhance their professional development and employability.
Built young people's capacity to avoid risky behaviours which may affect their workplace productivity such as substance and drug abuse.
Guided young people to understand the legalities surrounding entrepreneurship and corporate work.
Mentored young people on financial management to teach them how to save and invest.
Scope of Work
The Life Skills Mentoring Workshop was conducted through:
Presentations: facilitators presented their talking points on the topics allocated to them.
Discussions and Q&A: participants were provided with an opportunity to share their understanding of the issues covered and ask questions.
Interview: conducted an interview with some of the participants about what they do and left encouraging messages forfellow youths.
Workshop Outcome
Enhanced legal understanding of the labour, employment and intellectual property laws preparing them for work or self employment.
Increased knowledge on financial management, saving, investing and debt avoidance.
Increased understanding of personal values and integrity relevant for the workplace.
Patnerships
The Lifeskills Mentoring Workshop was conducted in joint partnership with Darius Mbela Foundation, a a non governmental organization providing vocational training to youths in Taita Taveta County which was hosted at their Centre. Skills Maishani facilitated in the workshop whilst DMF was instrumental in planning and mobilizing the participants majority of whom were former students who had undertaken a Vocational Training Course at DMF and university students from Taita Taveta University.
