Initiative Update: Clean Lagos, Empower Lagos — Stronger Together
This initiative marks my first time formally collaborating on a World Pulse project, and I am deeply grateful to be working alongside Ezinwannem. Her on-ground commitment to civic responsibility and environmental care in Lagos inspired this collaboration and gave it real direction from the start.
Clean Lagos, Empower Lagos is a citizen-led initiative focused on restoring dignity, environmental order, and shared responsibility in our public spaces. At its core is a simple but powerful belief: meaningful and lasting change begins when everyday people take ownership of the spaces they share.
Through my collaboration with Ezinwannem, I am learning what it truly means to move from concern to action. Environmental degradation in cities like Lagos is often framed as solely a government or infrastructure issue. This work challenges that narrative by highlighting the role of civic culture. When responsibility feels distant or unclear, neglect becomes normal. Our initiative seeks to rebuild a sense of ownership at both individual and community levels.
What our collaboration is focused on
Together, we are working to:
- Encourage individuals and small community groups to take responsibility for their immediate surroundings
- Promote simple, repeatable practices such as proper waste disposal, peer accountability, and routine local cleanups
- Use storytelling and documentation to make everyday acts of care visible and meaningful
- Support and amplify women’s leadership in community-based environmental stewardship.
As this is my first initiative, my role has focused on learning, supporting coordination, and contributing to documentation and reflection, while working closely with Ezinwannem’s on-ground efforts. This collaboration has shown me how small, consistent actions can gradually shift attitudes and behaviors.
Use of collaborative funds (if awarded)
If selected for the collaborative award, the funds would be used jointly to support:
- Basic tools and materials for community cleanups
- Documentation and storytelling to share progress and lessons learned.
- Coordination between collaborators to strengthen consistency and follow-through.
- Small community engagements that encourage participation and shared ownership.
Early reflections
What has stood out most to me is how quickly conversations change when people feel included rather than blamed. This initiative is already opening up space for dialogue around dignity, responsibility, and care for shared environments.
Looking ahead
In the coming months, I look forward to deepening this collaboration, sharing regular updates, and continuing to learn what sustainable, community-led change looks like in practice.
This initiative represents an important first step for me. Working together has shown me that meaningful impact does not require perfection or large-scale solutions at the beginning, only commitment, consistency, and a shared sense of purpose.
Together, we are learning.
Together, we are acting.
Together, we are choosing care over neglect.
