Hands Free, Hearts Free: Keeping Children in School

In Kenya today, too many children are forced to grow up too fast. Before the sun rises, 14-year olds are cooking, fetching water, caring for siblings, or working to support their families all while trying to stay in school. Some have even dropped out, not because they want to, but because daily survival demands it.

Yes, children can and should help at home sweeping the floor, doing simple chores, or helping a sibling with homework. These small contributions teach responsibility and build character. But children should never carry burdens that steal their childhood, their education, or their future. Waking up to feed a family or earn money should never replace learning.

“Hands Free, Hearts Free” is an initiative to ensure these children can attend school fully equipped, fed, and supported. Through school starter kits, meals, safe transport, mentorship, and community advocacy, I aim to lighten their burdens so they can focus on learning, dreaming, and reclaiming their childhood.

With this initiative, I plan to directly impact 500 or even more children in the first year, helping them stay in school, succeed academically, and break the cycle of poverty.

No child should have to choose between family survival and education. Together, we can keep the gates of school open and the future bright.

Goal:

To ensure that children in Kenya forced to perform adult responsibilities due to family struggles can attend school regularly, fully equipped, and emotionally supported, especially during critical levels like Grade 9.

Problem:

Many children in Kenya, especially in low-income families, wake before dawn to cook, fetch water, care for siblings, or work to support the family. Some have dropped out of school entirely because survival takes precedence over education. Despite “free education,” hidden costs such as uniforms, textbooks, transport, and meals continue to create barriers.

Objectives:

Provide school starter kits – including uniforms, shoes, textbooks, exercise books, and sanitary supplies for girls.

Support daily meals – establish school-based feeding programs for vulnerable students to reduce hunger and increase attendance.

Offer transport solutions – provide transport stipends or organize safe community transport to reduce long-distance walking.

Provide mentorship & emotional support – connect students with trained volunteers or women leaders who can offer guidance, monitor attendance, and provide psychosocial support.

Community engagement & advocacy – work with local leaders and schools to identify at-risk children, promote awareness, and advocate for timely government school funding.

Implementation Plan:

Step 1: Identify beneficiaries

Partner with schools, community organizations, and local leaders to list children performing parent duties or at risk of dropping out.

Step 2: Resource mobilization

Collaborate with NGOs, donors, women groups, and local businesses to provide uniforms, books, meals, and transport support.

Step 3: Mentorship program

Recruit and train mentors (teachers, volunteers, women leaders) to track attendance, provide guidance, and offer emotional support.

Step 4: Monitor & evaluate

Track attendance, academic performance, and student well-being. Collect feedback to adjust support programs.

Expected Outcomes:

Increased attendance and retention of children performing parent duties.

Reduced dropout rates caused by economic hardship.

Improved academic performance and emotional well-being.

Strengthened community involvement in supporting children’s education.

Long-term Vision:

To create a sustainable system where no child has to sacrifice education to support their family ensuring all children can attend school, thrive, and achieve their dreams without losing their childhood.
