#GiveToGain: The Question That Turned a Simple Visit Into a Promise

“What if we pass our Standard 8 exams and our parents fail to support us… will you help us?”

The classroom fell quiet when a young boy asked this question. His voice carried both hope and fear. In that moment, I realized how deeply these students needed someone to believe in them.

My visit to Mayera Primary School was meant to be simple, just a conversation with 32 students who were struggling academically. Many of them had begun to see themselves as failures. Their confidence was low, and some were already losing hope in education.

I decided to speak to them not about their weaknesses, but about their potential.

I encouraged them to believe that their current performance did not define their future. I reminded them that education could open doors not only for themselves but also for their families and communities.

To support them in a practical way, I gave each of them a notebook to help them with their studies. It was a small gesture, but I wanted them to know that someone believed in their ability to improve.

Then came the question from the boy.

He asked what would happen if they worked hard, passed their exams, but their parents could not fully support their education.

At that moment, I did not have all the answers. But I looked at their hopeful faces and said yes,I would help them.

I promised to keep tracking their progress and support them where I can in their studies.

That promise has now grown into something bigger.

Today, I am mobilizing resources to motivate and support these students as they work to improve their performance this term. I am organizing books, mathematical sets, and school uniforms that will be awarded to students who show improvement.

I am also reaching out to people who are willing to support this effort, because I believe that encouragement combined with opportunity can transform a child's future.

What started as a conversation with 32 struggling students has become a growing initiative rooted in hope.

For me, the meaning of #GiveToGain, inspired by International Women's Day, is this: when we give our time, encouragement, and small resources, we create ripples that extend far beyond a single classroom.

Those 32 students reminded me that sometimes the greatest gift we can give is belief. And sometimes, a simple notebook can become the beginning of a new story.
