Sister's love
The day my young sister dropped out of school, I felt as though the light in her eyes had gone dim. Not completely gone, but dim enough to frighten me. I remember looking at her and thinking, this cannot be how her story ends.
Esther is my young sister. She has always been soft-hearted, hopeful, and full of quiet dreams. But when she became pregnant while still in school, life changed suddenly and painfully. The whispers in the community were loud. The judgment was sharp. Instead of being surrounded with understanding, she was surrounded with shame.
She left school feeling defeated. Soon after, she entered into marriage, believing it was the only way to survive the embarrassment and secure a future for her child. Everyone seemed to accept it as the obvious next step. A mistake had been made, and this was the consequence.
But as her elder sister, I could not accept that narrative.
The marriage did not bring her peace. It brought silence. The kind of silence that hides tears. The kind of silence that swallows dreams. Each time I visited, I saw less of the Esther I knew. She smiled, but it was forced. She spoke, but without excitement. She was enduring life instead of living it.
Watching her fade was unbearable.
I knew I had a responsibility, not as someone perfect, but as someone who loved her deeply. I chose to stand by her when it would have been easier to say nothing. I reminded her constantly that becoming a mother did not mean burying her dreams. I told her that education still mattered. That her life was still valuable. That one mistake did not define her entire future.
There were moments she doubted herself. Moments she believed it was too late to change anything. But I refused to give up on her. I kept speaking hope into her heart, even when she struggled to believe it.
Slowly, something began to shift inside her.
She began to question the unhappiness in her marriage. She began to admit that she deserved peace. And one brave day, she chose to leave. It was not dramatic. It was not easy. It was a quiet, courageous decision made by a young woman who finally realized she deserved more.
That decision changed everything.
Esther enrolled in a polytechnic and pursued a course in Hairdressing. I will never forget the pride in her voice when she told me she had started classes. For the first time in a long time, she sounded hopeful. As she learned how to style hair, braid, treat, and care for clients, I saw her confidence return strand by strand, just like the hair she carefully styled.
Hairdressing became more than a course. It became her healing. It became her independence. It became her second chance.
Today, my young sister owns her own salon in Nairobi. She wakes up every morning with purpose. She earns her own income. She provides for her child with dignity. The same community that once whispered now walks into her salon as clients. The same girl who was almost lost in early marriage now stands strong as a businesswoman.
Every time Esther tells me, “Hellen, I am where I am because you never stopped believing in me,” my heart fills with emotion. I did not give her money. I did not solve every problem. What I gave her was belief. What I gave her was persistence. What I gave her was a reminder that she still had a future worth fighting for.
Because I chose to support my young sister instead of judging her, a ripple of change followed. A child is growing up watching a strong, independent mother. A young woman reclaimed her confidence. A cycle of rushing into marriage without opportunity was broken.
#GiveToGain is not just a theme to me. It is my reality.
I gave my sister encouragement when she felt ashamed. I gave her hope when she felt trapped. I gave her my voice when hers was shaking.
And today, as I watch her confidently run her salon in Nairobi, smiling with peace and pride, I know this truth deeply
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give another woman is refusing to let her disappear.
