Dignity Is Not a Privilege — It Is a Right

Team meeting of Sombhabona
I entered the workforce at a very young age, like many women in my country. What followed were repeated exits from jobs—not because I lacked competence or commitment, but because workplaces failed to be safe, respectful, or inclusive for women.
These experiences are not personal failures. They are systemic ones.
For years, I carried a vision: to build even a small organization where women lead, where policies are shaped through women’s lived realities, and where development is rooted in care rather than control. A place where gender bias, harassment, underestimation, and insecurity are addressed at the system level—not normalized as “part of the culture.”
Where financial limitations may exist, but dignity is never negotiable.
That vision became Sombhabona.
Together with a strong, committed team of women, we have learned to navigate structural barriers, limited resources, and daily challenges. We negotiate constraints, redesign processes, and solve problems continuously. But we draw a clear line: there is no compromise on self-respect.
This work has taught me something crucial:
Creating women-friendly workplaces is not charity. It is justice.
We do not need more motivational speeches about women’s empowerment. We need clear policies, accountability mechanisms, survivor-centered responses, and women in decision-making roles. We need workplaces where safety is standard, respect is institutional, and leadership reflects women’s realities.
My Call to Action
To women across the World Pulse community:
Let us share our stories—not as isolated struggles, but as evidence of systemic gaps.
To policymakers, organizations, and leaders:
Build systems where women do not have to choose between earning a living and preserving their dignity.
And to every woman dreaming of something better:
If the system fails you, imagine a new one—and know that building it is an act of resistance.
When women build workplaces grounded in dignity, they don’t just change offices.
They change futures.
