Bukenya Joseph in town
Kisozi, Uganda – October 2025:
Bukenya Joseph, 17, also known as Buk Josh, has been at the center of controversy after being demoted from a leadership position following allegations of authoritarian behavior.
Bukenya joined senior secondary studies in 2024 and quickly rose to become timekeeper in Term 2 of Senior 1. Known for his assertive and often intimidating approach, he gained a reputation as a political dictator, reportedly forcing peers to complete tasks for him and punishing those who refused.
Sources say Bukenya’s leadership style alienated many of his peers. “He used students’ hard work as leverage, threatening punishment if tasks were not completed,” said a fellow student who requested anonymity. “He was not well-liked, and his behavior created tension among classmates.”
Bukenya’s ambitions to become head monitor were initially thwarted when his name did not appear on the ballot. After a reprint, he was assigned as boys’ sanitary prefect, though reports indicated that teachers influenced the voting process. During his time in power, he allegedly engaged in malpractice by having students complete papers for him, which ultimately led to a report to the counselor and class monitor. This triggered administrative action, culminating in his demotion in October 2025.
Academically, Bukenya has struggled and is known for frequent absenteeism, further diminishing his standing among peers. Despite this, he is described as bragging and self-promoting, a trait that reportedly made his behavior more controversial.
Bukenya’s story is a striking example of the dangers of misusing authority, showing that leadership comes with responsibility, and actions have consequences—even for ambitious teens.
