Courage in the Dark

I grew up in a small village where opportunities were few and expectations were low. Many people believed that girls from our area would finish school early, get married, and depend on others for survival. But I had bigger dreams. I wanted an education. I wanted a career. I wanted a different life.

The journey was not easy.

There were days I went to school hungry because there was not enough food at home. Sometimes I studied by the light of a small kerosene lamp when electricity was disconnected. School fees were often unpaid, and I was sent home more than once. Each time I walked back home carrying my bag, I felt ashamed and discouraged.

People talked. Some said I should just give up. Others said my dreams were too big.

There were moments I almost believed them.

But deep inside me, there was a small voice that refused to be silent. It reminded me that my situation was temporary. It reminded me that darkness does not last forever.

I worked harder than ever. I used every free minute to study. I helped at home and still woke up early to read. When challenges came, I cried—but I did not quit.

Slowly, things began to change. I passed my exams. I earned opportunities I once thought were impossible. Step by step, I moved closer to the life I had imagined.

Today, when I look back, I realize that the dark seasons shaped me. They taught me resilience, patience, and strength. Courage, I learned, is not about having no fear. It is about pushing forward even when the way ahead is unclear.

I passed through the darkness. And in the end, I made it.

That is my courage in the dark.
