A Call for Digital Action from a Mental Health Advocate
I want to begin with deep gratitude to my mentor, the renowned Senior Psychiatrist Dr. R.S. Murthy Sir, whose commitment to gender advocacy inspires my work every single day. He recently shared a critical article, "Tyranny of Soaps," which compelled me, as a mental health professional and advocate, to use my voice here on World Pulse.
We are a global community of women raising our voices to change the world. But right here in India, our most powerful storytelling medium—television—is often working against us.
Our popular 'saas-bahu' dramas are not just soap operas; they are cultural conditioning. They depict women as perpetually oppressed, abused, and confined to roles of endless self-sacrifice. The insidious message I see echoed in my mental health practice is terrifyingly simple: strength means submission, and independence is a negative, disruptive force.
I see the impact of this messaging in real women's lives. When media glorifies cruelty and normalizes a daughter-in-law being treated like a domestic servant, it chips away at the self-worth and resilience of women across the country.
This is where our community steps in.
World Pulse is built on the belief that when women are heard, we change the world. We need to leverage our collective digital power to demand a new narrative. Instead of stories that reinforce these archaic, harmful ideals, we need content that truly empowers us.
* Imagine if our screens showed women reclaiming their dignity and assertively setting boundaries.
* Imagine narratives that celebrate female leadership, resilience, and success based on autonomy, not sacrifice.
We must collectively advocate for content that inspires the true strength and evolving roles of women in modern India. Our stories—the true, courageous stories we share right here—must force the media to mirror a more equitable and respectful world.
What specific actions can we take from our homes and communities to pressure media houses and advertisers to change these toxic narratives? Share your solutions below!
