After a long detention… Libya rescues dozens of migrants before they cross the sea

Libyan authorities announced the arrest of a group of irregular migrants in the Amseid area before they could be transported by sea towards Greece.

The Criminal Investigation Department stated in a press release that its forces conducted a field operation in the vicinity of Bir al-Ashhab, resulting in the arrest of 76 migrants of Egyptian, Bangladeshi, and Sudanese nationalities, in addition to the arrest of Libyans suspected of managing the smuggling operation.

The department explained that the security operation came after receiving information indicating that the migrants had been held in warehouses in the area for approximately 70 days. It noted that a raid plan was prepared targeting the site used to gather them before transporting them by sea.

The statement added that the force confiscated a boat that had been prepared for the crossing, and that the migrants were transferred to the department's headquarters to complete the legal procedures, while receiving the necessary medical and humanitarian care in accordance with applicable regulations.
