A Moment That Broke My Heart and Strengthened My Resolve

A Moment That Broke My Heart and Strengthened My Resolve

MENTAL DISABILITY IS NOT MADNESS

During my recent visit to a primary school, where I had gone to speak with teachers about inclusive education and how to support pupils with mental disabilities, something unexpected happened.

The headteacher asked if I could also speak to the learners, since many of them often discriminate against classmates who are different. As I began, one pupil suddenly referred to a non-verbal classmate as “mad.”

For a moment, I froze. My heart sank. I almost broke down in tears not just because of the word, but because I imagined how Collin's parent would have felt hearing such a statement about her own child.

That moment reminded me just how much still needs to be done to build awareness, empathy, and inclusion in our schools.

At Great Destinies Foundation, we are committed to helping teachers, parents, and learners understand that mental disability is not madness — it is a condition that calls for understanding, support, and love.

🌿 We continue to call upon schools, organizations, and individuals to join us in spreading awareness and creating peaceful, inclusive environments for every child regardless of their abilities.

Together, we can truly nurture minds and build destinies.
