Sometimes the Greatest Gift Is Simply Being Present

Today reminded me why I started New Day Initiative.

I spent the day meeting with a secondary school to introduce our initiative and discuss how we can support their Senior Three students through future outreach and essential supplies. Instead of arriving with gifts first, I wanted to begin by listening, building trust, and understanding their needs.

Later, I visited a referral hospital to learn how we can support people living with sickle cell disease. I met with the social worker, asked about the patients’ needs, and began the process of seeking official approval for future visits.

As I was leaving, I met a mother who had just lost her child.

She was sitting there, overwhelmed with grief. I sat beside her, listened, hugged her, and simply stayed with her for a moment. There were no perfect words to take away her pain, but I hoped she could feel that she wasn’t alone.

Today reminded me that making a difference isn’t always about the size of a donation or the number of people you reach. Sometimes, it’s about showing up, listening with empathy, and treating people with dignity and compassion.

This journey is teaching me that every conversation, every visit, and every act of kindness matters.

New Day Initiative is still growing, but my commitment remains the same: to serve communities with compassion, respect, and hope.

Together, we can create a future where no one feels forgotten.
